Don't be afraid to ask dumb questions . . .

How to wax your board

Place your board on a solid surface (or use a service stand which can be purchased from us!), Make sure you do set up in a well ventilated area and that you're not going to drip molton wax on high value floor surfaces.  You can use any OLD iron (the Mrs won't be happy if you use her top-of-the-range steam iron) or buy a dedicated waxing iron from us which is designed to do the job.

Before you start, clean your board with a wax remover and scrape off any old wax to ensure the board is clean . . . yes, it can be hard work but think of the rewards afterwards!

Once the board is clean, you are ready to start applying the wax.  Allow the iron to heat up to a temperature that will melt the wax and test it by holding the wax against the iron.  Hold the iron above the board and dribble the wax over the surface of the board.  You don't have to cover the whole board with wax at this stage . . . just a few drops over the length of the board.  Believe me, it's not fun scraping tons of the stuff off afterwards so be gentle!! If the wax gives off smoke then the iron is quite likely to be too hot, turn it down whilst you can still see.

Now you need to spread the wax around by rubbing the iron over the surface and joining all those dots. Never leave the iron in one place for too long, create a little puddle and move it over the entire base of the board. It is quite normal to feel that the heat is warming through the board to the topsheet however do not over heat the board in one area only. Once you have covered the entire board with a thin coat of wax, allow it to cool for about 30 minutes.

When the wax is "dry", you need to scrape all the surplus wax off.  You will need a sharp plastic scraper which makes light work of this, scrape from end to end (not edge to edge across the board) until all the excess wax is removed from the surface.  It's a bit like drinking a beer . . . the board will know when it has absorbed enough wax.  Use long strokes to get it as even as possible.

To get the best finish you are now ready to add a couple of drops of Zardoz if you want that extra kick of speed and finally structure your board. This is done by using a Nylon structure brush and brushing the base under pressure will leave a fine pattern of lines [tip to tail] in the base. The idea here is that it puts in a wet weather tread in the base and allows the board to travel freely.

Waxing frequently is important (ask the ladies!) it makes each slide more enjoyable. Bases need to waxed often to stop them drying out and becoming slow.  At the end of each season apply wax to the base and rails of the board and store it. The wax will soak into the base over time and leaving a coat on the edges will prevent your rails from rusting.
